Leopold's Maneuver

  1. Obtain obstetrical history including Espected Date of Confinement (EDC), Age of Gestation (AOG) and immunization.
  2. Review client's medical records including diseases, weight, nutritional status, etc.
  3. Prepare equuipments.
  4. Explain the procedure to your client and state your purpose.
  5. Instruct your client to empty her bladder.
  6. Provide privacy.
  7. Wash hands using warm water.
  8. Place a pillow on the right lateral aspect of the thorax.
  9. Position your client in dorsal recumbent.
  10. Observe the client's abdomen for longest diameter and where the fetal movement is apparent.
  11. Measure the fundic height by gently palpating the outline of the fetus and the fundus.
  12. Using the tape measure, measure the fundic height from top of the symphisis pubis to the top of the fundus then get the measurement in centimeter (cm).
  13. Do the first maneuver - while facing the client and standing at the foot of the client, place both hands flat on her abdomen palpating the fundus to determine the consistency, mobility and its shape.
  14. Then the second maneuver - place palms on either side of the abdomen palpating the sides of the uterus. Hold the left hand statioonary on the left side of the abdomen while the right hand palpates the opposite side starting on top to bottom. Then repeat on the other side.
  15. Then perform the third maneuver - gently grasp the lower portion of the abdomen just above the symphisis pubis between the thumb and the index finger and try to press the thumb and index finger together.
  16. Now perform the fourth maneuver - Face at the client's feet, place fingers on both sides of the uterus approximately 2 inches above inguinal ligaments pressing downward and inward in the direction of the birth canal.
  17. Reposition the client in her comfortable position.
  18. Documentation.
