Intramuscular Injection Checklist

Intramuscular Injection

  1.  Hand washing.
  2. Prepare all the equipments.
  3. Countercheck medication card to the order of the doctor.
  4. Do your drug study. Knowing the 10 rights in administering medication.
  5. Calculate accurately the volume and strength of medication to be administer.
  6. Complete data in medication card.
  7. Get proper size of syringe and needle to be used.
  8. Place medication card, syringe and needle in hypodermic tray.
  9. Go to your patient, introduce self and give proper explanation.
  10. Privacy.
  11. Position client comfortably depending the site for injection.
  12. Expose only the injection site with adequate lightning.
  13. Cleanse the site with cotton balls with 70% alcohol in circular motion, from inner to outer.
  14. Place dry cotton ball between fingers of non-dominant hand.
  15. Remove needle guard carefully.
  16. Pinch muscle of injection site using the thumb and two fingers of non-dominant hand.
  17. Hold the syringe with the dominant hand between thumb and first three fingers.
  18. Quickly thrust the needle perpendicularly to the muscle at 90 degree angle.
  19. Release pressure of the nondominant hand.
  20. Aspirate and makes sure that you are not hitting the vessels or else withdraw syringe and locate another site.
  21. If none, inject the medication slowly.
  22. Remove the needle quickly.
  23. Apply pressure with cotton spongge over puncture site.
  24. Massage the area if not contraindicated.
  25. Do aftercare and dispose needle properly.
  26. Wash hands.
  27. Documentation.
